Observations - Thoughts - Issues on Women's Voting Rights

Smt. Archana Sharma, Director of BINDU, writes about the basic civic and voting rights of women which are crucial for understanding a gender perspective and an all-inclusive feminist policy.

While women in the UK, US, Sweden, Canada, Mexico, and Switzerland had to campaign for decadesтАФsometimes a centuryтАФto secure the right to vote (often up to the late 1940s, 1960s, or even 1970s in Switzerland), Indian women secured equal voting rights immediately upon the country's independence in 1947.

Micro Insurance: Social Security with Savings

Since 2008, BINDU has partnered with the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) to motivate rural BPL individuals to opt for accidental policy coverage at just a Rs 100/month premium.

This provides a safety net for vulnerable families who cannot afford higher premiums or handle complex paperwork. Since 2018, this benefit has been extended to the urban poor in Dehradun, covering over 100 families (Agent Code: 83009R027).

Handcraft: Entrepreneurship for Poverty Alleviation

Since 2014, BINDU has run skill development programs to create handmade paper decorative articles, addressing the livelihoods of non-artisan marginalized women.

To market these items, we participate in local and national exhibitions, including the SARAS Mela, Delhi Trade Fair at Pragati Maidan, and the Rajpur Nature Festival. These orders help fund production workshops and foster economic independence.
